Nowadays, the USA people live in democratic society where their human rights are defended. Nevertheless, there will still be different problems and quarrels regarding religion. This quality essay discusses a possibility to achieve religious tolerance in the USA considering Marx’s critique of religion and “new atheism.” In my opinion, even such developed country as ours have not become free from old-fashioned ideas yet. We obey the law urging us to understand people with various beliefs. However, it is extremely difficult for us to accept human’s right regarding individual independence and uniqueness. Theoretically, it is possible to achieve religious tolerance in the USA as we are considered to be a free and diverse society with many people of different nations and religions living here. We will reach it only if each of us become capable of accepting people’s differences. Therefore, schools and media play the most important role as only they have the greatest influence on the society.
Furthermore, I think there might be some test involving religion for those who want to visit or immigrate to the USA because people have to understand that we intend to become a free society. Moreover, we do not want different religious fanatics to become a problem even for their neighbors and colleagues.
However, not all people are faithful, some of them are even criticizing the church. For example, Marx’s critique of religion is a convincing and valuable work helping to understand all the disadvantages and mistakes of various religions. Marx claimed that the religion is like opium for people because it just helps them to escape from problems and to live hoping that someone would help you.
I partly agree with the philosopher that all beliefs are just people’s way to hide from reality and to avoid any responsibility for the choices they make. Moreover, it is easier to have an impact on other people using religion as a tool. I support Marx’s thought that religion is a great illusion but I still assume that people have to believe in something to survive in such a cruel world.
Additionally, there are people who do not believe in anything. They are called atheists. “New atheism” is a movement of people criticizing any religion. Some people think that “new atheism” is just an occurrence created by media but, to my mind, those atheists exist. Moreover, they are giving their response right now and have been giving it for many years already. Although, their methods and influence are too weak yet, their response is quite effective because they have reached practically all the areas of information including media, journals, books, newspapers, and news. Therefore, their ideas are listened and read by many people, In the future, they will perhaps have much more powerful impact.
In conclusion, religion was always a cause for different fights and quarrels. There are various points about it in the USA, but the main idea is that Americans try to be tolerant. However, we still cannot understand people who are different from us and accept others’ thoughts about beliefs.
